The Brief History of Indian Immigration

The first-ever Indian arrived in Canada was Punjabi Sikh in 1904, who landed in British Columbia and settled in Vancouver. After that, many Indians from the Sikh community were persuaded by wages and began immigrating into British Columbia, working for many industries. Though the immigration policies were much more restrictive at that time, by the end of the year 1908, 5,209 Canadians were from South Asia, nearly all of whom were Sikhs. Several were successful entrepreneurs, serving both their own community and businesspeople throughout the city. A few years later, in early 1908, the Continuous journey regulation was enacted to prevent South Asians from entering Canada. The law required that people arriving from the country of their birth or citizenship by a continuous journey and or through ticket purchased before leaving their country of their birth or nationality.

Apart from that, for ending immigration from India for few decades, Canadian authorities passed another law that forced Indian immigrants to carry $200 in cash upon landing in Canada, while Europeans needed just $25. In the 1960s, racial and national restrictions were wiped out from Canada’s immigration policies which resulted in the explosive growth of the South Asian Community. In just ten years, the figure of South Asian Canadian raised from 6,774 in 1961 to 67,925 in 1971.

During the first decade of 21 century, India remained the second-largest source of invited immigrants behind China. Pakistan was also among the top ten sources. Additionally, India is the second-largest source of foreign students in Canada. Besides wide array of language and religions, people from all over India were choosing to migrate to Canada and this upward trajectory of immigration continues even today.

The Canadian authorities also provide an opportunity reunite international students with their parents by allowing them to enter Canada on visitor visa. Right now, “ Canadian government is proud to declare openly that Canada continues to attract visitors, students and business travelers from India,” said Citizenship and Immigration scale Minister Chris Alexander. “The impressive scale of visitor visas and study permits granted to travelers from India is an indicated of the strong ties that exist between our two great nations.”
